How to Calculate Reserve Retirement Pay (Step by Step)

The exact five-step method: points ÷ 360, times 2.5% (or 2.0% under BRS), times your high-3 — with a fully worked example, the statutory rounding, and where every number comes from.

The formula

Guard/Reserve (non-regular) retired pay is set by statute, and you can compute it with a hand calculator in five steps:

  1. Confirm eligibility:20 qualifying (“good”) years — years with at least 50 retirement points. No 20 good years, no pension. 10 U.S.C. § 12731
  2. Total your career points from your points statement, then divide by 360 to get equivalent years of service. 10 U.S.C. § 12733
  3. Multiply by your system’s rate: 2.5% per equivalent year under legacy High-3, 2.0% under BRS. The result is your multiplier percentage. 10 U.S.C. § 12739
  4. Apply it to your high-3 — the average of your highest 36 months of basic pay. 10 U.S.C. § 1407
  5. Round down to the whole dollar. Federal law rounds retired pay down, not to the nearest dollar. 10 U.S.C. § 12739

A fully worked example

An E-7 with 22 good years, 3,900 career points, a $5,200/month high-3, under the legacy system:

  1. 22 good years ≥ 20 → eligible.
  2. 3,900 ÷ 360 = 10.8333 equivalent years.
  3. 10.8333 × 2.5% = 27.0833%.
  4. 27.0833% × $5,200 = $1,408.33.
  5. Round down: $1,408/month — $16,896/year, starting at age 60 (or earlier under the 90-day rule).

Under BRS the same record pays 10.8333 × 2.0% = 21.6667% × $5,200 = $1,126.67 → $1,126/month — the 20% smaller pension BRS trades for TSP matching during the career.

Where each input comes from

  • Good years and career points: your official points statement — DA Form 5016 (Army Reserve, via HRC), NGB Form 23A/23B (Army National Guard, via your RPAM administrator), the ARPC points summary in myFSS (Air Force), or your ARPR/ASOSH on BUPERS Online (Navy). DoDI 1215.07
  • High-3:if you’re near retirement, average your last 36 months of basic pay from the pay charts; gray-area retirees’ high-3 uses the pay rates in effect when pay starts, not when they stopped drilling. 10 U.S.C. § 1407 DFAS military pay tables
  • Which system: joined on/after Jan 1, 2018 → BRS automatically; otherwise legacy unless you opted into BRS during 2018. Your LES says. DoD Guide to the Blended Retirement System

Common mistakes

  • Using calendar years instead of points ÷ 360 (overstates a traditional career by 3–4×).
  • Forgetting the round-down, or rounding to the nearest dollar.
  • Using today’s pay table for a pension that starts years from now (understates it — the base grows with each annual raise until your pay start).
  • Assuming AGR or AT time reduces the age-60 start date — it doesn’t; only specific qualifying orders do. 10 U.S.C. § 12731

Or skip the hand math: the reserve retirement calculator runs this exact computation live — same statutes, same rounding — and shows its arithmetic so you can check it.
